My take on asbestos houses

It scares people!

Particularly young families…

But in saying that, most old houses have asbestos, so you’re not going to be able to completely avoid it.

Here’s some tips that I use…

1. I won’t typically touch houses that have an asbestos roof
2. I won’t typically touch houses that have an asbestos exterior

In saying that, if it’s a super-hot market & asbestos is common in the area then you probably won’t have much of an issue. But just keep in mind when you are looking at comparable sales, you’re not expecting the same price as brick or weatherboard.

Other areas of the house with asbestos will be:

1. Wet areas
2. Potentially kitchen
3. Eaves

I recommend re-sheeting wet areas because you’ll likely interrupt the asbestos when you do demo, so have a qualified asbestos removal guy do this for you.

Eaves are also often asbestos, I just paint these.

The old vinyl/ lino stuff also has asbestos in it, again you will need a professional to remove this. Alternatively with a floating hybrid floor you can lay straight over the top as you won’t be interrupting it.
